April 2004 - Internet Security Risks

2004 is turning into a busy year for internet security issues. The world was already familiar with viruses and hacker attacks that had shutdown corporate and government computer systems but the new threats have emerged with programs called popups and spyware. The majority of the new threats are not aimed at large computer systems, but at individual internet users.

Popups are annoying because they appear on your screen without warning and interrupt your use, but the makers of popup programs often have hidden programs that can download viruses or spyware (see below) onto your PC.

Spyware is the name for a category of programs that run in the background of Windows to do work you are not even aware of. Spyware programs were originally designed to track an internet user's browsing habits, and would transmit a log file of the internet activity back to the programmer's server. They can affect the performance of your computer, because they tend to monopolize your PC's resources in the background, particularly if there are multiple spyware programs installed and running. They can even put your personal information at serious risk, as newer spyware programs are designed to transmit credit card or bank account information back to the hacker's PC, or allow a hacker to remotely access or control your computer's actions.

What Can Be Done?

Every PC that is used to access the internet should have an up-to-date anitivirus program, a pop-up blocker, and a spyware removal program. Firewalls are stronly recommended as well. For more information on these threats and how to deal with them, refer here.

November 17 , 2003 - Internet Email Scams on the Rise

The FBI has issued several warnings recently concerning the growing number of scams being run through the internet.

Many of these scams are of a type known as website spoofing. In these cases, the scam artist has created a website that has a name similar to an existing website (such as "eAmazon.com"), and the website looks like the genuine commerce site by duplicating its layouts and graphics. The scammer then sends email messages to people directing them to that website. Often, the email will tell the person receiving the message that there is a problem with their account, and that the information must be verified. What the program is actually doing is fooling people into giving up their confidential financial data which will then be either sold or used by the scammer.

First Federal Bank will never solicit information from our customers by personal email addresses. Should you receive an email message that appears to be from First Federal Bank that redirects you to a webpage for information verification, do not respond to the message or click on the link. Instead, contact the bank webmaster@ffbtn.com immediately to report the scam. We will investigate the allegation.
